This week in preschool, one small bracelet sparked a big moment of learning.
One of our children arrived wearing a red and white bracelet, and naturally their friends were curious.
“Why are you wearing that?”
The bracelet is part of a beautiful Bulgarian tradition called Martenitsa, linked to the celebration of Baba Marta – “Grandmother March.”
In Bulgaria, families exchange these bracelets at the beginning of March to welcome spring, wishing each other:
Health
Happiness
Strength
Good fortuneThe colours carry meaning too.
Red symbolises life and vitality, while white represents purity and new beginnings. Twisted together, they represent the arrival of a new season and the balance of life.
Traditionally, people wear the bracelet until they see the first signs of spring, when it is tied to a blossoming tree branch as a symbol of hope for the year ahead.
Moments like this remind us that in early childhood settings, learning often begins with children sharing their cultures, traditions and stories with one another.
